Hands-On Learning

At Walton School we like to learn while having fun. In my experience, learning is easier with hands on experience. Therefore, we try to act out our stories and ideas to really help the students understand our lessons and how to use them in every day situations.

Children get bored easily. They like to be active. I find that my students learn best when we play games, sing, act out or by doing the things that we discuss.

For example: When we were talking about how things change. We melted chocolate and watched it change and talked about it. Then we dipped fruit in it and had a delicious snack. When we talked about snacks and squeezing things, we squeezed lemons and made lemonade. When we did a unit on eating out. We had our own restaurant with a cook, cashier, waiter/waitress and customers. These activities help the lessons stand out in the students minds more than they do when we simply read and discuss them.
